Books | Magazines | Movies | Web SitesBooksHow to Train for and Run Your Best Marathon (Gordon Bakoulis Bloch)Another source of advice for the marathoner. This one seems geared more toward the beginner, but even the veterans can learn a thing or two. Training schedules focus on running for specified amounts of time instead of distances. Lore of Running (Tim Noakes)Thick, very technical book about the psychology and physiology of running. Pretty heavy emphasis on ultramarathoners. Making the Marathon Your Event (Richard Benyo)Offers training advice for beginner and advanced marathoners. Contains a general training schedule as well as schedules for reaching 3:30, 3:15, and 3:00 time goals. Peak Performance (Charles Garfield)Mental training techniques, including relaxation and visualization exercises, to take you to the next level. Covers more than just running, but this type of training applies itself well to running. According to the book, these techniques can also be used to excel in business and in your personal life. Pre (Tom Jordan)Relatively short book covering the short life of Steve Prefontaine, arguably the best distance runner America has ever produced. Doesn't necessarily get too deep, but it's a good introduction. Includes some inspiring race photos. Precision Heart Rate Training (Edmund R. Burke)Discusses heart rate training for running, walking, in-line skating, cycling, and circuit training (sorry, no swimming). Provides methods to determine your maximum heart rate instead of relying on inconsistent thumb rules. Running with the BuffaloesA season with the Colorado Buffalo cross-country team. Running with the Whole Body (Jack Hegge)Offers a series of simple exercises to increase awareness of the body's movements and how the body should move when running. Based on methods devised by Moshe Feldenkrais for martial artists. Purports to help you run faster with less effort, improve running style, and heal and prevent running injuries. Running WithinAnother mental-training book. In addition to relaxation and visualization, this one covers positive affirmation statements. Somewhat mystical, but an interesting read. The Quotable Runner (Mark Will-Weber)Quotes from a variety of sources about running and from some of the greats. Top of Page MagazinesMarathon and BeyondHighly recommended for the distance running enthusiast. Articles are less, "how to get faster," and more, "how to get more enjoyment out of our hobby."
